Dr. Lee McGinnis, Assistant Professor of Marketing at Stonehill College, specializes in the study of underdogs in sports and culture.  Dr. McGinnis generously contributed his expertise to Underdogma (pg. 281).  Here is a bonus excerpt from his interview.

“An underdog story of modest, simple origins can render a brand the underdog and thus inspire not only identification but purchase.  If you look around, plenty of brands exist that use the underdog story to promote themselves (Avis: we’re number two, so we try harder).  Look at the movies that have become popular based upon an underdog positioning: Rudy, Rocky, Seabiscuit, etc..  People identify and like they underdog.  Their stories inspire and, according to research, trigger purchase intentions.”
